Master Baiter: Link Bait Ideas to Capture Back Links
That’s how. That’s how what? That’s how you capture someone’s attention so they will link to your website with a valuable back link. Everybody preaches getting back links but how many really tell you how to do it?
It Starts With A Killer Headline
You have more leeway to do it in a blog post than in your website content. Think salacious, controversial, secretive, informational, humorous or curiosity. Then get to work on the opening paragraph.
The Waterfall Technique
The purpose of the headline is to make the visitor reader the sub-headline. The sub-headline should make the visitor read the opening paragraph. You get the picture. Don’t reel them in just to let them go.
Make A List, Check It Twice
People love to read top 5 lists, best 100 lists, etc. When someone says David Letterman, can Top 10 List be far behind? Odd numbers work better. And don’t make it too long. People won’t spend that much time on your website.
I’m as Mad As Hell and I’m Not Going to Take It Anymore!
People love to hear a rant. Whether you’re moaning about a politician, a company, a relative, a country or lousy weather, just make sure it’s completely entertaining!
Be Inspiring, But Don’t Be A Damn Copycat!
Plenty of people post famous, inspirational quotes. Like candy, they’re great while the buzz lasts but they offer no long term benefits. Anybody can copy and paste a quote. That’s unoriginal and no talent is required.
People are starving for original thinkers and industry leaders. Inspire people with your quotes and thoughts.
Satire, Cynicism and Parody
Pick a target, unload and let the chips fall where they may. The easier the target, the more benefit you’ll gain. If you pick something a little too close to home, though, you could be in for a boatload of negative comments. Can you handle that? Do you want to handle that?
Current Events and News Hooks
If your website sold baby clothes and you mentioned ex-Senator John Edwards and his possible ‘love child’, you’d generate a lot of traffic. It takes guts. To succeed, you have to risk failing from time to time.
Polls and Surveys
People love to answer polls and surveys to compare themselves against others. It’s human nature to congratulate yourself when everybody agrees with you or when you’re ’smarter’ than everybody else.
To really maximize these ideas, combine two or more of them. The best copywriters can use five techniques in a paragraph without the reader knowing!
